Autódromo José Carlos Pace, São Paulo
Built in 1938, the racing track at Interlagos hosted its first championship Grand Prix in 1973 after local racer Emerson Fittipaldi began to have international success. The the track quickly became a lucky charm for local racers in the 1970s.
In 1981, the Grand Prix moved permanently to Rio when it was felt that Sao Paulo's slums were at odds with the glamorous Formula One image. In the heyday of Ayrtom Senna, a Sao Paulo local, a $15m redevelopment programme was agreed and the the race finally switched back to Interlagos.
