Starting from a lowly ffth position Lewis Hamilton faced the prospect of a long evening racing cars significantly faster around the Marina Bay Street Circuit than his Mercedes. However, Sebastian Vettel's ill-advised off-the-line swerve to the left - to defend his position from Red Bull's Max Verstappen - and subsquent race ending shunt involving Vettel, his team mate Kimi Raikkonen, Max Verstappen and eventually a number of other drivers at Turn 1 resulted in Hamilton taking the lead.

Controlling the race from then on the Englishman took his third race win on the bounce and a commanding lead in the drivers' world title chase as a result.
